Introduction |
|
In Jordan & Watt's book more than 40 identifying features for each variant of the '49 are described. This site does not attempt to replicate all those. Rather, I have selected the most easily recognised features, and show them here to help identify the variants of the '49. I strongly recommend you obtain a copy of the original book if you need more details. Remember - this site only offers a taste of the full volume. As such, there is an increased likelihood that rare or previously unknown variants will not be recognised by the tools used here. DO NOT assume that because this site describes a variant as "unidentified" it does not exist, or is a fake. Check carefully with other sources first. Click on Definitions to see the main varieties and range of features we use for identification. From there you can also reach our special self-checking facility to assist with identification of your gun. The section on Values, gives a couple of ways to obtain an approximate set of values for different types and qualities of guns. There are many ways to navigate around the site; from the menu bar at the top of each page, the CONTENTS list below here, and various embedded links throughout the document. |
